At 38 weeks pregnant I was ready. I officially started maternity leave, written about twenty blogs, made sure clients were going to be taken care of, set up the nursery and Eliana’s big girl room, gotten everything I needed for having a home birth and cleaned the entire house. Whew!
I know most moms, including myself, are anxious about their baby’s birth, since you’re “full term” at 37 weeks. Since my first daughter, Eliana came at 37 weeks and 5 days and I felt mentally unprepared, (since most first time moms deliver at 41 weeks 1 day on average) I wanted to make sure I was TOTALLY ready for when this baby decided to come.
My first “guess date” was November 1st, then got switched to November 11th in the first trimester because of how small baby girl was measuring. So, I was pretty convinced this baby was coming early. I was thinking she would come on Halloween when I would be a little over 38 weeks along. So, I was surprised when this baby came “late” at 40 weeks 3 days. And guess what? 40 weeks and 3 days is actually the average length of pregnancy for second time moms!  It figures I would go past my due date since I thought this baby would come early! I was super anxious waiting for baby, but everything turned out perfectly and she came at just the right time.
My mom had been taking Eliana a few days a week for a fun music and dance class up in Denver for the past several weeks. This was such a freaking blessing and I am SOOOOOOOOOO lucky. It gave Bill and I some time alone time to have some fun date nights, allowed me to spend some extra time in my business and with clients, and it gave me a personal break from chasing a two year old with a bum pelvis and just feeling pretty awful with the end of pregnancy pains. On my due date, my mom came and got Eliana for the last week of her music class in Denver. I was just PRAYING, (and manifesting, and hoping, wishing, positive thinking, voo-doo, etc.) that she would come that night so I would have a few days to adjust just the baby and I. But, little miss had other plans. Instead, Bill and I got one more nice date night at Costco in and I even worked in a coffee shop on some client emails and blogs the day things started progressing.

My last Belly picture!
Tuesday morning the 13th started totally normal. There was literally nothing else to “prepare” for at home, so I headed to a local coffee shop to do some work. I ended up seeing my chiropractor there for a meeting, so we laughed about how I was “still pregnant” and I told her I’d see her Thursday for my weekly adjustment. The next two things are what I believe started my birthing time. (Instead of labor, it’s called your Birthing Time in my Hypnobabies class- which sounds way more empowering if you ask me!) After working in the cafe, I headed home for lunch and proceeded to watch numerous episodes of Outlander while doing labor induction exercises on Youtube. So, there ya go. Outlander + labor exercises = BOOM, your birthing time begins. Here’s an example of my day on Instagram stories ha!
Picture
As you can see, my last update was me watching Outlander and doing labor induction exercises!
I went to the bathroom around 2 p.m. and noticed I had lost my sparkly cervix protector. (It’s actually called your mucus plug, but that sounds disgusting so I made up the other term.) When I had Eliana, it was a few days after I lost my sparkly cervix protector that she came, but I was happy that there was at least a SIGN of baby coming soon!
By about 3:00 p.m. I was having 20-30 second “pressure waves” or “birthing waves” (instead of calling them contractions) very frequently. I was stoked and feeling pretty sure this baby was coming by at least 9:00 p.m. with how fast things were progressing. I messaged my midwife team and doula, called the hubby and let immediate family and friends know that, “it was time!”
Then, nothing happened. For like 11 hours.
Not really anyway. I continued having pressure waves throughout the day. They usually stopped me from moving, so I knew they were “real” but they weren’t “painful”. I was kinda bored and disappointed. I know that sounds nuts, but I literally told Bill, “I’m bored. Things need to get going here if I’m going to have this baby by tonight.”
Fast forward to about 9:00 p.m.  My pressure waves were still really inconsistent, so I told everybody, don’t rush, I’m going to bed, this may be a false alarm. I proceeded to sleep through most of the other waves using my Hypnobabies tools and audio tracks. I can’t speak ENOUGH about how important this birthing class and hypnosis tools were to me to have an easy and comfortable labor. (You can learn more here.) You are basically in a deep, meditative state during your labor to stay calm and work with your body instead of against it. You are actually in a state of hypnosis a lot during the day. When you’re driving in the car, watching a movie. It’s similar to being  “zoned out”. The last few months of my pregnancy, Bill and I took a Hypnobabies childbirth class. It was an all encompassing class but focused on having a natural birth. It also teaches you techniques to stay calm and have an easier birth using hypnosis. I listened to many audio tracks, practiced daily birthing affirmations and visualizations, and Bill read scripts to me as well to practice relaxing. It was absolutely a GAME CHANGER. You can read more about my first birth experience here and why I chose to do things differently this time here.  My first birthing experience was not calm and peaceful at all. You can read it in my blog from two and a half years ago here.
This class helped address my fears around giving birth again and made me feel so confident and ready. I highly recommend this birthing class to EVERYONE, regardless or where you have your baby- hospital, birthing center, your house, your backyard, whatever!
So, around 2 a.m. I started keeping track of my pressure waves. They were consistently (finally) about ten minutes apart for an hour. Each time a wave came, I went into hypnosis and relaxed my entire body. But, I was still super disappointed. In my mind, I still had a LONG way to go if my waves were only ten minutes apart. The waves were feeling pretty strong, so I still  went upstairs from laying on the floor in the living room (don’t ask me why now I thought that was a comfortable place) and woke Bill up. I told him things were getting serious, call everyone to come. Literally after I said that to Bill, the pressure waves started coming every 2-3 minutes consistently. It was crazy going from ten minutes apart to two minutes! The most comfortable position for me was being on my hands and knees and leaning on a small bench in our bedroom. (I never imagined laboring right there, but I didn’t move until I was made to.) When the team of midwives and my doula arrived, I was in the transformation (or transition as it is typically called) stage. They did a great job of helping me stay in hypnosis, stay deeply relaxed and calm during typically the hardest part of your birthing time. Finally, Bill and the team convinced me to get into the birthing tub. It was nice and warm they said, but I was being super stubborn and didn’t want to move. For some reason, getting into the tub meant things were “getting real” in my mind and that baby was coming. I have no idea why I was resisting this...blame it on the hormones! So, after about 5-6 pressure waves and 10 minutes later I finally got into the birthing tub which was set up in the baby’s nursery just across the hall. I had flameless candles going and an essential oil diffuser with orange, Balance and peppermint going as well. My body got really uncontrollably shaky (- due to hormones like adrenaline) and I started getting really nauseous. This also happened with Eliana. My doula put the peppermint oil on a rag and helped me smell it every time I felt a wave of nausea. The Balance oil helped me feel more calm with my shaky body.
After going through a couple waves in the tub, my body was telling me it was time to start pushing. We all listened to a special “pushing baby out” audio track in the room and it was very relaxing and calming. The pushing is obviously the most intense part of the birthing time. Not going to lie, my I worked hard to stay as calm as possible. I relaxed my face, shoulders and hands as best I could.  My legs started getting really cramped up and tired and I started to just want to be done. But, Bill and the team did a great job at keeping me calm and reminding me to breath during the pushing. I pushed nice and slow this time...since last time I pushed so hard and fast I ended up having 40 stitches. Even though I pushed slower, I still only pushed for a total of 14 minutes. So, the “active” part of my birthing time was from 2 a.m.-4:37 a.m. Easy!
After a few good pushes, out came baby. Welcome to the world Emma Jacquelyn! As soon as baby came out, my doula helped me flip over and sit up to hold her. Bill and I snuggled baby as she wailed-and dang is she loud! Almost immediately after flipping over, I had a few more small pressure waves and delivered the placenta. The midwives put the placenta in a bucket and held it next to Emma. I didn’t really know this with my first, but there is still a lot of blood and nutrients being delivered to the baby for about an hour after birth from the placenta.  Read more about delyaed cord clamping here.
So, wherever baby went, the placenta followed her until we clamped and cut the cord about an hour or so later. It was really neat! Bill held Emma and rubbed in the vernix (the cheesy looking stuff) which she had a TON of. Instead of washing off the vernix immediately, its better to rub it into their skin! It’s super moisturizing and naturally an antimicrobial! Read more here.

It took me awhile to get motivated to get out of the tub as I was still feeling a lot of discomfort. Because...ya know, I just pushed a human being out of my vagina. But, finally, I got into our bed and nursed sweet baby Emma for the first time. She latched right away and we had a great first feeding. After feeding, Bill cut the cord and the midwives and my doula looked over my placenta. I think my little sister was only slightly weirded out. (Ha, love you sis!)  It was cool all the things they could tell by just looking at the placenta. They could tell my placenta was full term since there were some calcification and there was an amazing “tree of life” of veins and arteries on it. Read more on the placenta here.
Finally, it was time to check mom and baby out. I didn’t need any stitches this time and only had a few minor tears and “skid marks” as they called them. Baby was measured and weighed in at 7lbs 13 oz. and was 20 inches long! (Eliana left the hospital at 5 lbs 3 oz. and 19 inches long.) So Emma baby was almost 3 pounds bigger!
I then took a nice warm shower, changed my clothes and Bill and I snuggled in bed with our new little addition. (Both of our favorite parts of the homebirth was getting to just SLEEP in our own bed uninterrupted and not having to go anywhere!!) The midwives and our doula cleaned everything up and said their goodbyes. It was amazing to wake up the next day to a clean house!
Lastly, one of my favorite parts of the entire birthing experience was seeing Eliana meet baby Emma. My mom brought her down from Denver the next day. She looked at my tummy, then at Emma and exclaimed, “Hi, baby Emma!” She has been a great little helper and will be a great big sister. I’m so excited to watch them grow together!
Overall, I’m so happy with my birthing experience. It was empowering, beautiful and healing in so many ways. If you’re thinking about your next birthing experience, I highly recommend checking out Hypnobabies, having a doula, a midwife, and maybe even considering a home birth with a birthing tub! I can’t believe all of those words just came out in one sentence, and how different they are from my first birth experience, but I wouldn’t change it for the world!

Evelyn rose was born 11/20 at about 5:30am, 7 pounds 11 ounces. My birthing time began Sunday night as cramps, and pressure waves started Monday at 9am every 4 minutes from the start. I was able to stay comfortable at home till 11:30 pm when we went to the hospital. It was definitely hard to keep focused when we got there but I never stopped listening to my tracks! I was blessed to have a fabulous midwife and nurse who were totally on board with my birth plan. Started pushing at 2:30am. She sat in my birth canal and refused to budge for 3 hours but finally made her debut with a major cone head couldn’t have done it without Maddison and Hypnobabies, I was so determined to keep my plans for a natural birth and I did and I am so grateful to have had that beautiful experience

I began my Hypnobabies journey at 24 weeks pregnant, using the 6 week in person study with Madison, Hypnobabies instructor and my doula; I followed the course faithfully and transitioned to the maintenance schedule every day for the rest of my pregnancy (I was consistent with joyful pregnancy affirmations daily and on average missed one night a week of evening audio during my maintenance time but still made sure I didn’t miss any of the tracks).

I experienced daily consistent practice waves beginning at 36 weeks.

My practice waves became a little stronger and more consistent two days before I gave birth. On Sunday, January 26th (40 w 2 d) I had a feeling I was going to give birth on Monday as I was feeling changes in the waves and like baby was continuing to drop. I spent the day with my mom and husband, light house cleaning, resting and working a puzzle that I had bought specifically for my birthing time, it was very relaxing. We listened to birthing day affirmations while working the puzzle. Before bed I did the Miles Circuit and played Yahtzee with my husband and mom. I woke up at 2:30 am with practice waves 5-8 min apart, they were different that what I had felt before so I knew my birthing day was beginning. I got up and used the bathroom and walked around the house for about 10 min. I laid back down and listened to your birthing time begins, I text my doula to keep her in the loop at 3:45 and listened to deepening your hypnosis which helped me fall back asleep for a bit. I told my husband around 5 am that it was going to be our birthing day and we cuddled for a bit. At 6 we got up and he made me eggs and toast. We slowly started to get ready the day and I stayed distracted picking up around the house and did a little laundry. Between 6:30 and 7 I started to lose more of my mucous plug/some bloody show and strength of the waves were building. By 7:30 my waves were become more consistent at 4 to 5 min apart, I was still moving around comfortably listening to birthing day affirmations and leaning on the counter and going into deeper hypnosis with my off switch for each wave and moving back into center. By 8 am I was consistent with waves at 4 min apart and at least one minute in length and had my doula head to the house. My waves were building quickly over the next 30 min and I was getting deeper and into my own space, less conversation between waves. By 8:30 I was feeling ready to go to the hospital, my doula arrived by 8:40 and agreed that it was not too early go. I listened to easy first stages in my headphones on the way to the hospital and my mom kept her hands on my shoulders to help me keep more relaxed during waves. I barely remember the drive to the hospital as I was deep into my own space at that point. We checked in and got back to triage at 9:30. I immediately went to the bathroom and started to vomit without warning, I continued to have Hypnobabies on in my ear buds. I remember My doula told me this was good vomiting was a sign transition was near. After getting cleaned up a nurse checked my progress, I had my headphones in and did not hear the conversation but I was 5 cm dilated. I was moved to L&D after the doctor came in. Bloody show was increasing and I started to get the shakes. I spent most of my time laying on my left side over the next two hours, my mom and my husband were rubbing on me and giving my counter pressures. My doula would hold my hand and coach me through waves. Deepening your hypnosis was playing in the background. I got up to use the bathroom and started to feel the urge to push, they checked and I still had a little lip. I chose to move into hands and knees position after this and found comfort on my knees with the head of the bed elevated and arms resting on the top of the bed. Pushing baby out track was amazing, I felt very in sync with the messages on this track. I was feeling aware enough to want to try to catch my baby, I reached down and felt him crowning which was amazing. As I continued to push I felt the sensation that I was going to tear, I expressed this fear to my doula and she coached me through allowing my body to stretch and helped me to keep my pushing tones low. I was able to relax well on the head of the bed between pushes and stay comfortable. The doctor ended up catching my baby as the sensation got very strong and she had to unwrap the cord. The relief of the baby and the fluids exiting my body was like nothing I had ever felt before. Turning around to meet my baby and have him on my chest was the most joy and comfort and I had ever experienced.

Between Hypnobabies, my Hypnobabies doula and the loving support of my husband and my mom I had a beautiful, amazing and comfortable birthing experience!! My birthing day was so positive and full of joy!

P.S my guess date based on US was 1/24, my guess date was 1/27, during my visualization track I often felt that it would snow on my babies birthday. He was born on 1/27 at 12:30 pm and it snowed later that evening :)

So! Team green Turned...

Ok, let’s get to the story. I was having Braxton Hicks which developed into prodromal birth waves early Sunday morning. They were like 2-4 mins apart and lasted like 30 sec. I’d been on pelvic/bed rest due to an irritable uterus for about 15 weeks and since 36 weeks it has been lifted. Since I was no longer on rest, I decided that I would walk when I had the chance. My husband and I were going to stores, doing last minute pick ups and throughout the entire morning, I was having those waves. I was literally stopping traffic in aisles lol the discomfort wasn’t too bad but I did have to do some focusing. Around mid afternoon they just stopped 🤷🏾‍♀️

We had some sex that night. I woke up to pee so many times I couldn’t count. Then at around 5 am Monday morning, I’d gotten back into bed after a peepee run and I don’t know if grunted or what, but fluid kind of spewed out of me. I got up to go pee again. Then I was thinking  “maybe it was just left overs from last night... I did clean things up enough...🤷🏾‍♀️” got back into bed it was almost time to get up. My husband got up a few mins later and so did I. I started telling him what happened and more started to leak out. I was in denial though. He asked me was I ready and I cried a little bit and said “I don’t know! ” with a rag between my legs.

Called my doctor and she wanted to confirm so she told me to come on in at 9 when the clinic opened since I had an appointment already later on that day. This is around 6 am. We started to pack things up, put stuff in the car and my husband stopped by his job until the clinic had opened. I didn’t have any pads to catch the fluid so... I used one of my baby’s cloth diaper prefolds  worked like a charm.

When we got to the clinic around 10, they did my last ultrasound to make sure things were ok and took my vitals. My doctor checked my cervix. She needed a baseline to make sure I was progressing. We’d already discussed it prior to. Let’s do a flash back really quick.

I have a bunch of fibroids inside and outside of my uterus. Some had amazing blood flow, some could have potentially been in the way where baby couldn’t descend and all of them could have prevented my uterus from waving like it should in order to push baby down. My doctor did not want to do a C-section on me because of where the fibroids were. We needed a vaginal birth.

So when I came into the office and my waters were no longer intact, she knew that that check would be one of few that would be done because they did not want to put me at anymore risk of infection. I was about a half cm. She sent me to the hospital and told me to use nipple stimulation/pump to induce birth waves. The next options would be Cytotec or Pitocin. Cytotec would not be an option for me. 🏾‍♀️ She also called the hospital and told them I was coming and to have a pro natural birth nurse waiting on me.

On the way to the hospital, we made a pit stop. See, I was supposed to have a home birth, but due to the fibroid situation, plans changed. I’d fallen in love With my midwife team so I made sure to keep them updated and usually called them first lol she made sure to tell me to eat a high protein meal before I went in. We bought a whole rotisserie chicken, hummus and pretzels and I had some crackers. I ate a leg quarter then we still took the rest of the chicken up to our room.  I was determined not to starve. That was the second best decision of my birth. The first was choosing Hypnobabies. I’ll get to that later.

We got checked in, they wanted to hook me up to the saline lock. My doc and I had already discussed that as well. Since I had so many fibroid issues, it was important that I be ready in case I hemorrhaged and needed medicine to stop any bleeding. My Hypnobabies came in handy. Anyone who knows me knows that hospitals, injections, blood draws and needles can have me acting a plum fool. So I turned on my fear clearing track and allow someone to stick me not just once (and I didn’t even look! I always look), but twice. They had to place the catheter in for the lock and then draw more blood for the lab for if I needed blood. I was quite fascinated with myself. I even told my husband he could leave me to go pick up our breast pump.

The hospital would not provide us with one to use for the purpose of induction. Third best decision I made was having that breast pump. Anyone who’s having a hospital birth, take your pump with you just in case you need it for the purpose I needed mine for. I hadn’t even opened it yet.

I was given a birth ball that really didn’t work out because it was a bit too small. But I still used it until someone was able to come change it out. I got to work pumping on and off. One at a time, 15 mins on each. I switched it up when my nurse suggested I  do 15 on each then break for 30. I continued to eat when I was hungry. I drank LOTS of water.

Hypnobabies was amazing during the first stages of my birth time. I was able to sleep through birth waves multiple times listening to the tracks and would wake up rejuvenated on my own ready to pump, use the birth ball and walk the halls to help baby move down. I sat in the tub a few times and it really helped. Fell asleep there every time. My nurse made sure to remind me to relax my pelvic floor. That was one of the most difficult things to do because it involved being intentional throughout the birth waves. By the next day, I’d have it down.

I allowed the nurse to check my cervix at 8 pm Monday evening to see if I’d progressed. I was at about a 2-3 and she could feel baby’s hair. She offered to stretch the membrane but I wasn’t ready for that. I kept doing my routine. At I think midnight she checked again and I was at about 5-6. I allowed her to stretch my membrane to 6 (or what her fingers measured at 6). Might I also add that she allowed me to wipe with a wipe that helped minimize the transfer of any bacteria every time. My temp was also checked periodically (to monitor for infection) and baby was monitored 20 mins break 40. At one point sitting on a birth chair made baby’s heart rate drop. When my nurse changed shifts, she left me with another amazing nurse whom I’d met before.

I slept from about 6 am Tuesday, until probably 7:30-8 am. I did use a sleep mask and listened to my Hypnobabies track. Apparently my doctor and new nurse had come to check on me and was astounded that I was asleep and let me get some rest. I woke up on my own ready to go again. Didn’t really have an appetite but I tried to eat a banana. I took another bath hoping it would help baby move down. Pumped some more and we noticed the baby’s heart rate drop with each back to back wave. I was having them but they weren’t strong enough. I took one last hot bath then my nurse checked me around 11am and I was just at 6 fully from her finger measurements. We discussed Pitocin. The plan was to start at the lowest dosage and see what happens.

I was given the sugar water in my arm and then at 11:30 am the P Drip started. Those waves were really becoming intense. The toilet was my friend and it was hard because I had to be unplugged from monitors in order to go to the bathroom. Two times I peed in the bed on the absorbency mat. It got harder to do that because my brain was saying no. I wasn’t comfortable on the birth ball anymore. I hated the bed and had to lower the bottom half and stay on my knees.

Pitocin was bumped to the next dosage a hour later. By this time, I was very very very very vocal. I made sure to be intentional about my facial expressions and tried my hardest to keep my tone low. Couldn’t do high pitches. I stopped listening to my Hypnobabies tracks. I instead listened to a relaxing track I’d fallen in love with on a loop. There were a few instances where my words wouldn’t form. I was still alert and aware though. I started to shake uncontrollably and felt extremely uncomfortable and my husband pulled the emergency tab in the bathroom. Nurses rushed in. By this time I was naked naked. Clothes had become uncomfortable. They had to bring warm blankets for me.

At around 3, my nurse asked it I wanted to be checked again. I said yes. I was still at a 6, BUT this time, I was like 98% effaced. She said paper thin. I wasn’t disappointed but more so determined. I couldn’t be in that bed anymore. I wanted to walk and move. The waves were coming back to back with about a minute in Between. One of my Hypnobabies tracks has affirmations that 20 mins will feel like 5. I think that’s what was happening by this time.

My husband was a trooper. He kissed me, made me feel beautiful and sexy (even smacked me on the booty a few times- how appropriate ), tried your help me stick to Hypnobabies, pushed my hips in during pressure waves. He did an amazing job. The hip thing really helped!!!

So it’s around 3, my nurse got the birth chair ready for me to sit on because I didn’t want the bed. It’s a stool with a hole inside. After a few waves of sitting there I felt something shift. Like to the point where I couldn’t keep quiet during a wave and my legs would work right. I couldn’t sit anymore. Kept telling myself that “it’s only temporary. It’s only Temporary.” I told my husband he needed to make me a pallet on the floor. I wanted to be on the floor extremely bad. He and the nurse made me a space close to the monitors. Within a few minutes, I was hyperventilating which caused the baby’s heart rate to drop so she told me I had to get up off of the floor and into the bed because I needed oxygen. “I can’t.” She said “yes you can.” But I really couldn’t. I had begun to feel pressure but I think I was questioning it because it didn’t feel like the description of having to poop. It felt like the need to push and I wasn’t telling her because I didn’t know exactly what it was. I kept losing the sensation. Then all of a sudden her and my husband picked me up (all 220 lbs) and put me in bed. She gave me the oxygen while I was starting to push.

See she’d just called the doctor to tell her that I was 6 cm but I was effaced at 3. This all started happening at around 3:40! All of a sudden, a thousand nurses came into the room. Not students, nurses. I’m in the bed holding back grunts trying to breathe through the next waves and not push baby out like they’re saying because the doctor wasn’t there yet. I told my husband to put on the final Hypnobabies track to push baby out. I couldn’t even hear the words. I just knew that voice. I was so alert and aware and Unafraid. I was asking questions in between waves. They asked if I wanted my head back further and I said no. I told them that it didn’t feel right in a certain position. One nurse pulled my leg up so I was in a somewhat side laying position. My nurse could see baby’s hair and my husband was talking me through it. They called the hospitalist because my doctor wasn’t there yet. I still remained calm. She introduced herself. I already knew who she was. She had doubts. I didn’t want her but I remained calm. Then I looked over at the door and what do ya know, my doctor suited up and ready with her jolly self.  They were saying not to push and I was trying not to. I started breathing through it. They said baby’s heart rate was dropping. I looked at the monitor and say that it was in the 80s. They were suggesting I push outside of a wave.
My words: “I’m trying to get my mind right. Hold on”
I was not about to push through without a wave although my doctor was doing perineal massaging. Baby was still in the 80s and I knew whoever I would meet would be fine.

On the next wave, I pushed and embraced ever sensation with wonder because it wasn’t what I expected. It felt amazing! When I did feel the “stretching” it felt like a bandaid being ripped off really quickly and that was it. I felt the head come out, then the shoulders and body and nothing hurt. I was amazed. I could do it over and over again.  On October 8 at 3:58 pm, Baby came out in 1 push weighing 6 pounds, 9 oz and measuring at 20 inches long.

They put him on my chest and we didn’t know who we were meeting at first and then my husband opened his legs and said “It’s a dingaling!” We got a Baby boy!  The cord turner white pretty quickly and he was able to cut the cord.

He yelled at us for about 30 secs and then was fine. I cried because I couldn’t believe I had done it. I had a baby despite all odds against me. People doubted but I didn’t. I knew God had me. God shocked the whole floor. I didn’t have anymore pressure waves because the Pitocin was stopped before pushing. My placenta wasn’t budging. I could hear doc saying that the fibroids were probably in the way. So nurse came over to push on my belly and it released. My placenta was very small once it came out. Most likely why the cord turned white so quickly. It was about the size of a medium-large hand. I have a miracle baby. Those fibroids were most likely taking most of the blood supply when the placenta was forming.

He pooped on his way out. Had a head full of hair and poop lol

They pushed on my belly some more to make sure I wasn’t bleeding excessively. They could feel so many different fibroids inside of me and they all were so impressed. They left me on Pitocin just in case I did hemorrhage. I got checked every 4 hours during my 2 day stay. Made sure my uterus was going back down to size with no problem and checking my vitals. I didn’t get much sleep. My adrenaline was on 1000 after everything and I didn’t really crash until about 12 hours later. I still couldn’t rest well because I don’t like hospitals and kept waking up to check on my baby even though dad was there.

My doctor said that she wouldn’t recommend I get the fibroids removed because I’d have to get C-sections after. She also said that in the future, I’d most likely not have to get Pitocin because my uterus knows what to do now. She said I should be able to have a home birth next time!

Welcome Samuel K. Turner II to the world!
He is a breastfeeding baby too! Working on the latch though.

At 9:30pm on Tuesday December 4th we went to visit friends who had their baby on the first. 1:30am on Wednesday December 5th I woke up feeling anxious and so I listened to my fear clearing track. This relieved my anxiety, but I still could not sleep. At 3pm, I went to the bathroom and had the bloody show and knew that today was going to be the day. At 6am Elliot woke up to his alarm and I told him, “we are going to have a baby today”. At 7am, I turned off TV and music. Elliot lit candles and I started the lavender in the diffuser. We closed all the blinds and we started the hypnobabies tracks following the order. I lounged on the couch for a few hours, moving pillows to support in different ways.

At 11am I got up and started pacing. The tracks were going on a loop in the background. I felt pressure in my lower abdomen and pelvic region. Elliot gave me a heating pad on an extension cord. Elliot filled the bath tub and I sat in it and got right back out. I felt so uncomfortable and had to keep moving. It felt more comfortable to keep moving. At times I would lie down on the bed and then I would get up and continue pacing with the heating pad.

Elliot took our dog over to our neighbors so he could have a peaceful experience as well. We called the doula and the doula informed us we were experiencing pressure waves. It wasn’t until later that we realized we had been for quite a while. It was around this time that sitting on the toilet became comfortable with the cool tiles beneath my feet. Elliot got a damp dish towel and added lavender essential oil to it. We kept it on my forehead and around my neck. I continuously drank water with electrolyte tables to stay hydrated and energized. At 4pm, I sat down on the toilet and felt a push. The pushes continued. The doula came at 5:15 and was in disbelief that I was pushing due to my calm demeanor. We put our bags in the car and headed to the hospital. As we were driving, I continued to listen to hypnobabies, and I was very aware of where we were and wondered if I should help husband get to the hospital with directions!

We arrived at the ER entrance at 6:30. I walked slowly to the check in desk and had my hands around my husbands’ neck as he walked backward through the hallways. As they checked us in, I was making the most hilarious (I thought) dad jokes. We carried the speaker with us to keep the hypnobabies going. Triage was apparently chaotic, but I didn’t notice. I continued to look for the right time for a joke.

I measured at 10 centimeters plus 2 and they quickly moved us to a birthing room. In the birthing room I could continue mother directed pushing. The hospital allowed us to dim the lights. All the nurses were respectful and responsive to the hypnobabies tracks. They said that listening kept them in a calm space as well. At around 11 the doula said it seems like you are getting tired. The baby is safe, would you like to try another position that the doctor suggests. I was so tired at this point that the supine position the doctor suggested sounded like heaven. I napped in between pushes. I felt our babies head crowning. With a few strong pushes Penelope graced us with her presence at 11: 19pm. Thanks to hypnobabies my husband and I got to fully enjoy and experience the entire day of our daughters’ birth. Every time we reflect on that day we are amazed by the confidence and composure that hypnobabies offered us.

Leonidas Quinton Hakan Cooper was born on March 1st at 8:48 am! Guess date was March 13. My mom had told me recently I was born at 38 weeks. I was thinking March 20 would be a cool birth date but remembered babies “know when to be born” so luckily I had the essentials ready to go! He was born at 38 weeks, 2 days.

I had two softer stools and started feeling stuff out of nowhere (back pressure, waves) 11:57 PM Thursday, Feb 28th. Ironically I said often “hope he’ll wait until at least March”. He literally started the process right as March began.

Pretty much right away I was having pressure waves consistently and closer and closer from midnight to 6 AM. Then we got ready to go to Beginnings Birth Center. We got there 7 am - midwife Jen confirmed I was already fully dilated when we arrived! (For the 1 hr car ride, I definitely needed my hypnosis as it was uncomfortable!) While tub filled up, experienced waves in the shower with help of my husband Clinton and doula Jeanie. I got into tub and pushed 52 mins he was born 8:48 AM! I just had minor 2nd degree tears. I had option of laughing gas but chose not to use it since the hypnosis was effective at keeping me focused ! I used the birthing affirmations track when things started at midnight while I experienced waves in the tub at home and then the hypnosis music the whole rest of the time along with cues from my husband and doula . PEAAACCEE was my go to :)

As I approached 40 weeks little man had made NO SIGN of being ready. He was still high up jamming into my ribs and I had not lost my mucus plug. I didn’t worry too much and was grateful my midwives don’t like to do cervical checks so I didn’t have any numbers in my head to discourage me (or give me a false sense of security!) Jolene encouraged me at my final checkup at 39 weeks to plan a fun date on our guess date so I didn’t think about the fact I was still pregnant! The hubs and I PLANNED to go to dinner and a movie and it never actually happened!
At 39+6 at 11:30pm I had a close friend text to check in and jokingly told me she’d love it if he came this weekend because she was in town. I told her not to get her hopes up because things hadn’t even come close to starting yet (what I didn’t know at the time was she felt the Lord tell her to be praying for me that night, and that’s what encouraged her to check in!) Right at midnight I felt a tiny voice tell me that I needed to put down my phone and go to sleep, so being 9 months pregnant and always tired I did just that. As I curled down to sleep I felt a fairly strong practice wave and when it finished little buddy danced a jig as if he knew today was his birthday! I had a few more practice waves and thought it was encouraging, but decided to go to sleep figuring if it was really the day my body would let me know! I slept two hours and just after 2 am woke up to a much stronger wave. I used the bathroom and timed a few and saw they were coming every 3 to 4 minutes so I let my husband Jon know I thought this could be it. I started listening to my tracks and tried getting a little more rest.
At 2:30 my waters broke and things picked up quickly in speed and intensity. Unfortunately since I was already in my active birthing time from almost the get go I wasn’t able to access my hypnosis quite the way I was hoping to, so the waves were pretty uncomfortable the whole time. Hubby started timing waves for me since I was already vocalizing through each wave and found them to be 2 minutes apart lasting almost a minute a piece! We called the midwife who said to keep timing them for twenty or thirty more minutes and to call her back. Our doula, Ariel, arrived about fifteen minutes later and saw that I was very close to transformation and called Jolene who agreed it was time to go.
At this point I was in the shower on hands and knees and as they got me out to get me dressed I remember saying “are you sure we aren’t going too early? We have HOURS to go!” And they both assured me it was better to be there too early than too late. We left for the birth center around 4:30.
When we got to the birth center Jolene was still filling the tub so she took my vitals where I had collapsed on the floor (I couldn’t stay standing during the waves anymore no matter how hard I tried) and after a few waves on the ground they got me into the still-filling tub. I found a position that helped and stayed there for about an hour vocalizing through each wave. Between waves Jon pushed fluids into me and read me the partner scripts and every ten to fifteen minutes Jolene checked the baby’s heartbeat and assured me he was very happy and doing well.
Finally Ariel suggested a change in position (which I wasn’t excited about) and I ended up laying in a semi reclined position in the tub holding onto hubby with one hand and Ariel with the other. The change in position was just what we needed for my body to be ready to push! I pushed for close to an hour (baby was average weight but had a BIG head). Jolene told me she was going to check baby’s progress with the next wave and found him about half an inch away from crowning. I was so shocked he was that close that I felt his head myself and couldn’t believe he was already almost here! It took a couple very uncomfortable waves to birth his head (95th percentile!). I had one more small gentle push and the rest of him was born at 7:53am, on his guess date which is both St Patty’s day as well as my Grandfather’s birthday who we named him after. I did have a couple second degree tears (which I’m convinced with how big his head was would have been third degree if I had used an epidural), but they healed quickly and well. While hypnobabies certainly didn’t make my birth pain free (I think it would have done a much better job on that front if my birth time had started slower!) it kept me relaxed between each wave (and according to Jolene and Ariel during each wave as well, but I definitely didn’t FEEL relaxed during the waves, ha!). I NEVER ONCE felt panicked, scared, or unsafe. From beginning to end all I felt was support and love from those around me and confidence that my body knew what it was doing, even though it had never done this before. I didn’t even remember nitrous oxide was available until five minutes after he was born! I had such a peaceful birth and such a positive experience that I get to treasure the rest of my life, and I do credit a lot of my mental state throughout the birth to my hypnobabies training, even if I never achieved hypnosis during the birth. Even right after he was born I thought to myself that I could totally do it again!

Hannah's Pain-free 1st Birth

3:22 AM on April 5 I started having pressure waves (Hypnobabies word for contractions). They lasted for about 3 hours and then tapered off. I listened to Your Birthing Time Begins (Hypnobabies reminder of all tools, track, and cues to use during birth) and Birthing Day Affirmations and Deepening Your Hypnosis (Hypnobabies hypnosis track to deepen the level of hypnosis). I was able to get a few more hours of sleep because the Deepening Your Hypnosis track was so relaxing.
I had mild cramping and mild waves all day. I just knew that my birthing time (Hypnobabies word for labor) was near. At 8 PM April 5th, the waves started to move lower and I could start to feel my cervix opening with each wave. The waves continued and were 11 minutes apart for about an hour and a half. Around 11 they became more sporadic. I had a hard time going to sleep. So, I got up and listened to Hypnobabies Special Safe Place (Hypnobabies hypnosis track that creates a special place for mom and baby) and Deepening Your Hypnosis several times and Birthing Day Affirmations.
I tried to get some sleep and would have 2-3 very strong waves per hour which made it hard to sleep. Finally got a decent sleep between 4-6 am. 6 am the waves really picked up in intensity and were 9 minutes apart. I got out of bed after an hour and the waves continued. I listened to Birthing Day Affirmations and relaxation music. Jeremy, my husband made me breakfast. I took a shower and we went for a walk. Waves were about 10-11 minutes apart. Our dog wouldn’t leave my side and the cat was neurotic. I just knew this was my birthing time.
I ate half of a green chili burrito and then my waves really picked up after that. Jeremy and I went to get coffee at Dutch bros and I kept timing my waves. They were consistently 8-9 minutes apart. I started feeling them a lot in my back and that was causing some discomfort. Our doula Heather had mentioned some Spinning Babies moves that could help with any back waves. We asked her to come over and show us some Spinning Babies and counter pressure techniques. She came and had me lay upside down from the couch. I think that realigned baby and I was much more comfortable after that. She also showed my husband some counter pressure moves that would help with any discomfort during a wave.
After she left I laid down and listened to Deepening track in hopes of getting some sleep. The waves were too strong so I decided to take a bath while listening to Easy First Stage (Hypnobabies main birthing time track). My waves really picked up and I had 5 waves 5 minutes or under. I texted the birth center and let them know. They said to have Heather come to the house and continue my birthing time at home. I texted Heather and asked her to come over. I am so glad she had shown Jeremy the counter pressure because my waves really picked up in intensity and I started to feel like I was going to throw up.
I asked Jeremy to start the counter pressure and I was able to regain my relaxation and started ooooing through my waves. Heather arrived around 5:30 and gave Jeremy a break. She started to press on my hips during a wave and that really helped to open up my hips. It got to the point where I not only had discomfort free waves but I actually looked forward to the next wave. I was able to breathe and oooo through them and picture my cervix Open Open Open.
We had Easy First Stage playing and the Relax (Hypnobabies cue to deepen hypnosis) and Release (Hypnobabies cue to instantly go into hypnosis) cues helped me to further surrender to the waves. I was able to completely relax no tension or fighting the waves. The affirmation “I trust my body knows exactly what to do and I feel good about it” kept running through my mind and I was able to do just that! I started to feel something similar to a runners high. I felt so in control and powerful over the waves as I trusted my body.
My waves were quickly progressing to 2-3 minutes apart. Heather began heat compression with lavender oil. The waves were intense but I had such a deep sense of calm that I was actually enjoying them knowing that “each wave brings me closer to meeting my baby” The cues in the Easy First Stage track made it easy to stay present during each wave and relax into each wave. We called the birth center and let them know where the waves were at. They said since I hadn’t lost my mucous plug/ no bloody show and my water hadn’t broken to wait it out for a few more waves. I went to the bathroom and lost my mucous plug there.
My husband called the birth center back and told them. They said it was up to me but we could head to the Birth Center when I was ready. I was starting to feel the waves changing from opening my cervix to pushing waves. So, we left for the birth center. I put my headphones in and continued to listen to Easy First Stage. I was completely comfortable the entire 20-minute drive to the Birth Center. On the drive, I felt baby move deep into my pelvis. We arrived at the birth center and I had a few waves walking in. I was still able to smile at the nurse who introduced herself to me and showed us our room.
I asked them to fill up the tub right away. I got in and was so relaxed that my waves slowed way down. I started to worry but told myself “I trust my body knows exactly what to do and if it needs to rest for a minute I will surrender to the rest.” After about 20 minutes my waves picked up and were definitely pushing waves. During one wave the pressure popped my waters. That was the most amazing experience. That gave me a burst of energy to know that we were so close to meeting our baby girl. I then pushed for 40 minutes and my husband caught her as she came out.
He put her on my chest and we had the sweetest first moments of a family of three. We then slowly moved out of the water and into the bed. As soon as we were dry and on the bed, she immediately latched and started breastfeeding! My midwife and nurse said that was one of the most peaceful births they had seen for a first-time mom. I am thankful for Hypnobabies for helping me to not only have a peaceful, pain free, empowering birth. I look forward to my next birthing time with eager anticipation!
I also appreciated how Hypnobabies prepared my husband as a birth partner. He was there every step of the way and felt confident in how to support me. He even made a Hypno-bear to remind me of my orange glowing hypno-anesthesia. Thanks, Hypnobabies!

Growing and birthing this little boy was such a special experience. Up until 35 weeks I filled my time teaching other expectant couples Hypnobabies Childbirth Hypnosis Classes and attending births as a doula. Being close to 42 weeks with my first son, I was mentally preparing to patiently wait a little extra time to meet this little one too. Unlike my experience with Kuba, I never got to the point where I was “over” being pregnant. I loved feeling him kick, loved watching my body grow and change and loved dedicating myself to my Hypnobabies program and preparing for our special day.

(Preface on Hypnobabies: Hypnobabies is a complete childbirth education program combined with powerful SELF-hypnosis techniques, famous for living up to it’s slogan in providing birthing women with “easier, more comfortable births”, and in some cases like mine, pain-free. The course stresses complete dedication, practicing techniques for around an hour every day, avoiding sources of negativity about birth, and maintaining focus on creating the type of birth you want to have. And, it worked! Throughout my birth story I will use Hypno-language which helps us re-frame how we expect to experience childbirth. (I.e. birthing time is used in replacement of labor, pressure/birthing wave for contraction and transformation instead on transition)

Birth Story

At about 5:45am on April 1st (41+2 weeks) I woke up to some different feeling waves than I had been having the weeks before with pre-birth waves (braxton hicks). I was still unsure it was the start of my birthing time or not, so I played my “Easy, Comfortable Childbirth” Hypnobabies track and went back to bed, waking just slightly during a wave, then falling back to sleep.

Around 7am I was feeling sure that it was my birthing time as the waves were coming in a predictable pattern about 6-7 min apart. So, I notified my doula, Candace, birth photographer, Brezi, and midwife, Jolene, that baby was probably coming sometime today. From there, I listened to “Your Birthing Day Begins” which reminded me of all the Hypno-tools I could use throughout the day. I then put on my Relaxation music and just snuggled in bed with my husband having a lazy morning.

~9am We finally rolled out of bed, I made my family breakfast while listening to “Birthing Day Affirmations”, and my mother-in-law came by to pick up our 3 year old son. My waves began to come closer as I made breakfast, but were still short. With prompting from my doula, I did some belly mapping and figured baby was ROP and she reminded me to do a few forward leaning inversions during the day to give him space to move if needed. After the inversion, waves spaced a bit, so I went and took a nap while listening to my "Birthing Day Affirmations" and actually slept for a couple hours more. During my nap, my sweet husband and mother-in-law cleaned the house, and soon after my 3 year old son left with Abuela.

~1:30pm For the afternoon, my husband and I just lounged around the house, did some laundry, snuggled and watched Sweet Home Alabama. My waves were coming about 5-6 minutes apart and lasting about 30-40 seconds, so every few minutes during our movie I would use my "finger drop" hypnosis technique while laying on my husband's lap to completely shut all voluntary muscles off, relax completely and focus on sending hypno-anesthesia throughout my body. Toward the end of the movie, I could tell things were progressing and wanted to shower and pack some last minute items, but also wanted to finish the movie! Once the credits rolled around my waves were about 4 minutes apart and 40-45 seconds long and beginning to get stronger. I remember I could tell my waves were becoming strong, but thinking “This is really quite easy, I could handle so much more than this.”

After the movie ended, I went upstairs to shower, and my husband went to the corner store to get some Dayquil as he had a cold. In the shower with my affirmations playing, I could tell my waves were getting close, and I focused intently on my PEACE cue for instant comfort during a wave. As one would begin I would reach my arm up to lean against the tile and rhythmically circle my hips while saying Peeeace quietly to myself. Then, continued washing my hair and shaving my legs! In the shower I remembered my doula-brain kicking in and thinking “If I was with myself as a doula right now, I would probably be encouraging her to get to her place of birth” - but the waves were still so easy, I was sure I had some time to finish last-minute tasks.

I got out of the shower and my husband was home. My waves were very strong, but my PEACE cue was keeping me very calm and comfortable.  I asked him to time my waves as I proceeded to actually put on some makeup, because... birth photographer, right!? My husband told me the waves were coming about 2.5 minutes apart and lasting 45-50 seconds. This is the funniest part of my birth story to me, because in hindsight I was literally shaving my legs and putting makeup on while in transformation (HB word for transition).

~7pm I asked him to message my birth team and tell them how close the waves were, and at that time I began to feel a slight sensation to hold my breath during my waves (like the feeling of getting in cold water). I remembered the same sensation moments before pushing my 1st son out, so at that time I told my husband we needed to leave birth center.

~7:15pm As we got in the car I put my “Deepening” track on my headphones and relaxed the entire way to the birth center, imagining my hypno-anesthesia and making low, quiet ahhh-ing sounds during a wave. (Still saving my most powerful hypnosis track, "Easy First Stage", in case things were to get stronger). My waves spaced a little during this point and again, being a doula, knew that probably meant I was about to start pushing soon. However, despite our 20ish minute drive to the birth center, I never felt worried or panicked. I said little prayer in my head that baby would wait until we arrived to the birth center to be born and then continued listening to my track.

~7:30pm We arrived to the birth center, and my photographer and Doula greeted us, with my midwife just seconds away. I walked into our beautiful birth center room, and went to the restroom for one wave, asking my doula if she would begin filling the tub for me and hang some support handles, then told everyone I believed I had a slight cervical lip, which was maybe producing that breath-holding sensation.
I came out of the bathroom, and had another powerful wave leaning on Mike. This time I felt the need to hold my perineum, and right then with a pop, my bag of waters released and following the waters I could feel a little head and tuft of hair beginning to emerge! "Okay, I guess I don't have a lip!" I said. At this point my wave was bringing him down quickly, and I began to breathe through it as to not push him out too fast. I don’t know if I said it or just thought it, but I remember telling my baby we needed to slow down just a little bit. My wave ended and my midwife offered me the tub before the next pushing wave. I waddled into the tub with just enough water for him to be born in. With another wave I focused on my breathing, allowing my perineum to stretch. As it finished, I took a short break, then finished pushing my baby’s head out between waves so I could control the speed at which he emerged and prevent any tearing from happening (it worked! Not even a slight tear!).

7:43pm His head was born with guidance of my hands, and then the rest of his body. My midwife instructed me to wait a moment before lifting him as she removed a nuchal cord and then we brought my sweet, healthy, baby boy up into my arms. Welcome Earth-side baby Trey! I told him what a beautiful job he did and thanked him for helping mama.

My immediate postpartum stay was nothing short of perfect. All of my birth attendants (midwife, nurse, doula and photographer), were also dear friends I’d had long-time relationships with from my first pregnancy and from working in the birth field. The Beginnings Birth Center was beautiful and quiet and intimate. I was spoiled with fresh-baked bread, kisses from my husband, and loving praise and congratulations from everyone in the room. Family came by with a hot meal and flowers and our 3 year old son as he finally got to meet his long-anticipated baby brother. Thank you to all of those who gave so much love and support through this journey and thank you Hypnobabies for providing me with the tools to have an easier, more comfortable, and yes, pain-free birth.

Valencia’s Birth Story I suppose I should start Valencia’s birth story at the beginning of my pregnancy. I had been taking ovulation tests for a couple months so that we could plan the perfect time to conceive. I was just finishing up school at Meredith Manor and didn’t want to experience morning sickness during school, so we timed it so that I would get pregnant right before school ended. Two days after I graduated, and on the day we arrived in Colorado we got the positive pregnancy test!

I scheduled an ultrasound at a local OBGYN when I was around 8 weeks. I told the doctor that I wanted a VBAC (vaginal birth after cesarean) and told her that my previous birth was an induction with epidural and that I didn’t progress past 4 cm, which led to a cesarean due to non reassuring fetal heart tones. She told me that we could try for a VBAC, but I likely wouldn’t progress again and would need another cesarean. I left the office that day and immediately knew I would not be going back.

I did a lot of research on birth and decided that I wanted to go with a midwife practice and that I would love a water birth (baths are my go to when I need me time)! The problem was that there were no local hospitals that offered water births and I wasn’t yet comfortable with the idea of a home birth. There was, however, a midwife practice almost two hours away that worked with a hospital that offered water birth. So after some discussion with Jon we decided that was the best option for us.

We found out around 14 weeks that our baby was a girl, and shortly after that we hired our doula! When looking online at one particular doua’s page I saw that she taught something called “Hypnobabies”. I did a bit of research and it sounded wonderful! I was a little bit skeptical at first, but I knew I did not want an epidural this time around and was looking for other comfort measures. Upon meeting with her I knew that we had to hire her. We took her 6 week Hypnobabies class and I’m not exaggerating when I say it was life changing. It helped me understand my previous birth so much better and made me very aware of the pros and cons to various interventions. After the course I practiced the “maintenance” Hypnobabies tracks and awaited my birthing time.

As my due date came and went my anxiety began creeping up. I was so fearful of an induction due to my last induction ending in a cesarean, so I listened often to the “Fear Clearing” track. On November 21st, I had pressure waves (Hypnobabies word for contractions) every 15-20 minutes, but tried not to get my hopes up as this had happened the previous day as well. I had also had my membranes stripped the evening before, so assumed it was just cramping due to that. That evening around 10pm, we went to bed and I listened to my hypnobabies tracks. They started getting closer together, so I got up and took a bath, since I knew if it wasn’t really my birthing time the pressure waves would stop in the bath. They didn’t though! They continued to get closer together until they were about 7-8 minutes apart. Since we were so far from the hospital I showered, straightened my hair, and woke up my husband around 12am. We got called the hospital and Madison, our doula, to tell them we were on our way. We got to the hospital at around 3am, and since the pressure waves were around 5-6 minutes apart, I thought that surely I was at least 4-5 cm. It turns out I was only 2cm, but since we lived so far away they let us stay at the hospital. From the classes I knew that the number meant nothing, but I still couldn’t help but be disappointed that I wasn’t progressed further. Since I was up all night we rested some while I listened to my tracks. The next few hours consisted of walking the halls with my husband so that I could use him for support every time a pressure wave came. Since I was using my deep hypnosis, they truly only felt like pressure, and I would even venture to say it was relaxing. Madison helped me use the peanut ball to rubbed the pressure points of my feet. Around 3:30pm I felt a small pop and felt some wetness, which we later realized was my water breaking. At that point I was around 4cm and 75% effaced. I got in and out of the bathtub a couple times, which was really relaxing as my pressure waves had gotten stronger.

At 7:20pm I began feeling very pushy, and so I was checked and I was 4-5cm and 100% effaced. My midwife told me that since I wasn’t dilated I had to resist the urge to push otherwise my cervix could swell. That is when the most difficult part of my birthing time began. The bathtub and hypnosis helped me not push, but it was so physically and emotionally exhausting fighting what my body so naturally wanted to do. At that point I was only vaguely aware of everyone’s presence in the room. I remember my midwife offering an epidural to help me not push, but in my mind an epidural meant cesarean and that made me slightly panic. The voice of my first OBGYN telling me that I likely wouldn’t progress again came creeping back into my mind, and I rebelliously fought it by using hypnosis to resist the pushing urge. At 8:35pm I was 6cm, so I figured we still had a long road ahead of us. At 9:07pm I could no longer resist the urge to push and was checked and was fully dilated with a small cervical lip! I got out of the tub due to my baby having decels. I had the “pushing baby out” track playing in the background. I pushed for two pressure waves while leaning over the back of the bed on my hands and knees. The midwife offered to hold back the cervical lip to get things going, so I agreed and moved to my back. Right after the midwife told me that we had to get her out quickly due to decels and suddenly the room became very loud. Everything was a blur and I felt almost delirious from the lack of sleep. I remember my hips hurting from nurses holding my legs back. The midwife said she would have to use forceps and do an episiotomy if I didn’t get her out soon, which terrified me, so I had to constantly push, even between pressure waves, which was suddenly painful, now that I could no longer focus on going into hypnosis. I remember the sound of my own screams scaring me, and Madison gently telling me to try making low tones instead, like we had learned in Hypnobabies. I tried, but couldn’t do it with all of the intense feelings. At 9:43pm I gave birth to a healthy baby girl, with a nuchal hand. Valencia weighed 8lbs 4 oz and was 21 ¾ long. After she was born they placed her on my chest and she started nursing within a few minutes. I was overcome with so many feelings! A huge adoration and love for her, a sense of triumph that I did have a natural, vaginal birth, and strangely enough, a feeling of loss over the peaceful waterbirth that I had envisioned. As I cuddled my beautiful daughter on my chest, I realized even though I just went through the most intense day of my life, I couldn’t wait to try again for my peaceful birth.

I’ve had to do a lot of processing, which is why I’ve just now written her birth story over a year later. I can say without a doubt, that if it hadn’t been for my doula, Madison, and my hypnobabies classes, I definitely would not have been so calm and peaceful for the majority of my birthing time. Even though there are definitely some things I would do differently with the knowledge I have now, this still brought me my daughter, therefore, to me it was still a beautiful, unforgettable experience.
